During this walking/driving tour of the middle and upper Wolf River, we will visit four important and beautiful properties that we have protected, three with boardwalks. We’ll start with breakfast at the Wolf River Cafe and then caravan to the nearby William B. Clark Preserve and its boardwalk. We’ll then visit the 740-acre, $1.1 million Briggs tract and hike into its forests and wetlands as far as the conditions and our abilities allow.

Next is the Mineral Slough Boardwalk on the Ghost River Section of the Wolf, where we’ll drive through 4 miles of wild forest that would have been lost if we hadn’t protected it in 1995. Last stop is Johnson Park in Collierville where we’ll hike their new, half-mile boardwalk and see one of the weirs built to prevent the Wolf’s continued head cutting. This weir is part of the $12.5 million, US Corps of Engineers Wolf River Restoration Project that will create an 8-mile long, 2,100-acre Wolf River Wildlife Area bordering Collierville to the north, which includes this park. Please pack water and a picnic lunch if you plan to do the full tour. Participants will drive their own vehicles.

Wednesday, June 18, 7:30 p.m. Chickasaw Group Sierra Club Film Night Willy Bearden "Overton Park, A Century of Change" Power House, 45 G.E. Patterson (between Main and Front)

Overton Park has been the stage for much of Memphis' history for over 100 years. In its earliest incarnation it was the shining jewel of the Progressive Movement in Memphis, it was the public's backyard and front porch. In its boundaries lies the only old growth forest to be found in any urban setting. By the 1960s, efforts by powerful federal and state government agencies nearly spelled its doom with a plan to split the park with an interstate highway system. "Overton Park, A Century of Change" is the story of the park's founding, its brush with disaster, and its renaissance. Filmmaker Willy Bearden will be on hand to discuss the film. Old Forest Steward and surveyor, Don Richardson, will discuss some of the threats still facing the Park after 100 years. Sierra Club film night is hosted by Indie Memphis. Admission is free (with donations accepted), and refreshments will be available. Come early to get a good seat. For more information contact Tom Lawrence at (901) 237-4819 or bus@thecave.com

Thursday, June 26, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m Chickasaw Group Sierra Club Presentation "DTV Transition and the Environment" Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Avenue

You may have heard the rumors that television is undergoing a dramatic change. It's true. On February 17, 2009, per a federal law, television broadcasters will be required to shut off all analog broadcasts. This means that you must be able to receive digital television by that time or turn off your television for good. But does this mean you have to buy a new television and throw away all of your old ones? Not necessarily. WKNO Promotions Manager Teri Sullivan will deliver a presentation on the digital television transition and the analog shutoff and how you can be prepared. She'll talk about how you can convert your current television into digital (without throwing out the old TV) and dispel a few myths about the DTV transition. She'll also offer information on how to properly dispose of your old TV (without harming the environment), if you do decide to replace it. For more information contact Tom Lawrence at (901) 237-4819 or bus@thecave.com

Major Mapping Charette Meeting - Lannom Center, Dyersburg
10.17.06 - 10.17.06

The Mississippi River Natural and Recreational Corridor is pleased to announce the award of a significant Federal Scenic Byways grant which will be administered by the State of Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).

This grant will enable the project to produce a series of consensus building and informational meetings for West Tennessee.

The first event scheduled will be a major Mapping Charette Meeting involving the six counties of Shelby, Tipton, Dyer, Lauderdale, Lake and Obion. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 17th, 2006 in Dyersburg at the Lannom Center located at 2000 Commerce Avenue (38024). The Charette will begin at 11:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. and lunch boxes will be available for attendees.

The Meeting will feature our keynote speaker, Michael Gallis, who is widely considered the country’s leading expert in large-scale metropolitan and regional development strategies. Mr. Gallis will speak on "New Approaches for Achieving Environmental Success in a Global Age." His company was also the creator of the 2001 Sourcebook for the metropolitan area of Memphis and was produced by the Governor’s Alliance. This major study was one of the inspirations that led to the development the Mississippi River Corridor project. His presentation will begin at noon.

This professional Charette will provide an opportunity for citizens throughout West Tennessee to meet with planners, engineers, architects, landscape designers and committee member experts as we plan the best route for the Mississippi River Corridor in West Tennessee. Focus groups will allow for active participation.

Registration is requested for the lunch meeting and keynote speaker.
